She combines her love for contemporary R&B with her

passion for pushing the boundaries of the genre. Her music is a unique blend of soulful melodies,

Hailing from the vibrant music scene of Detroit, the birthplace of Motown, Y’La is part of the creative resurgence emerging from that region. Growing up, she was mesmerized by the church choir, and how they would march in for the Sunday service. Captivated by the music, Y’La was always trying to sneak into the choir line with her dad, grandma, and aunt.

 

From a young age, she longed to one day become a superstar. Raised by an artist/producer father, Y’La

had a lot of professional guidance and picked up a bit of music theory basics in school. As an adult, however, Y’La was pulled in a different direction. She built a career around her college education in public health and mental wellness  after graduating from Michigan State University,  but Y’La never lost the genuine passion she felt for music. Tired of her 9-5 drag and unable to continue ignoring her true calling, she made a professional pivot in 2022. Y’La returned to school in pursuit of a master’s degree in Entertainment Business at Full Sail University and shifted her focus back to music.

Operating in the alternative space, her style is a little bit of contemporary R&B blended with the influence of other genres like neo-soul, gospel, and funk. This versatility gives her work a traditional sound but with a zany, weird edge. Y’La writes songs about life, love, and heartbreak, weaving narrative threads together to tell a story. Deeply connected to the music, she

allows the words to reveal themselves in her songwriting process.

 

She channels powerful artistic energy, becoming a vessel for lyrics to flow through. Y’La is finding ways to merge her love for

behavioral health with her music, writing lyrics that connect heavy topics, and breaking them

down to be more accessible to the general public. Her message is reaching the people and

sparking an open dialogue for positive change.

With a stacked catalog of songs recorded, she is pushing through the process of mixing and mastering tracks for her upcoming EP.
